Knotwork interlacing's owe much of their perfection and beauty to the use of mathematical formulae and are peculiar to British Art. Many are inspired by the the simple beauty of Celtic patterns adorning standing stones in the West Highlands.

Zoomorphics are designs where animal forms were deliberately distorted, as were plants to avoid breaking the commandment forbidding the accurate copying of any living thing whether of land, sea or air.
